Jobless rate dip



Unemployment in the Reno-Sparks region fell to 6 percent in April compared with 6.2 percent a month earlier, and 4.5 percent in April 2007. About 600 more people were at work in April than March. The jobless rate in Carson City stood at 6.5 percent in April compared with 6.9 percent in March and 5.1 percent a year ago.

Silver Legacy loss



The Silver Legacy Resort Casino posted a loss of $4.4 million on revenues of $32.4 million in the first quarter, compared with a profit of $336,000 on revenues of $37.3 million a year earlier. The property, a joint venture of Circus Circus and The Eldorado, says the lack of a bowling tournament this year hurts.

Golden Phoenix loss



Golden Phoenix Minerals of Sparks lost $1.8 million on revenues of $4.1 million in the first quarter. A year earlier, it lost $1.24 million on revenues of $798,112. The company mines molybdenum at Denio, north of Winnemucca.

Itronics loss



Itronics Inc. of Reno reports an operating loss of $443,371 in the first quarter on revenues of $653,131. A year earlier, the company¹s operating loss was $673,369 on revenues of $532,856. Itronics recycles photochemicals into fertilizer.

Ormat raises capital



Ormat Technologies Inc., a geothermal company headquartered in Reno, raised $149.6 million through the sale of 3.1 million new common shares. The company says it will use the money to buy or develop geothermal projects.

Moly deal



SeAH Besteel Corp., a Korean company, agreed to buy 4 million pounds of molybdenum a year from a mine under development by General Moly Inc. near Eureka. General Moly says the price is "significantly higher" than its estimated cost of production.

An era ends



The Krispie Kreme store at Kietzke Lane and South McCarran has closed. The nearest Krispie Kreme store now is 169 miles away at Pinole, Calif., according to the company's Web site.

Air service cut



Air Midwest says it will halt air service to Ely effective May 31. The Phoenix-based carrier, a subsidiary of Mesa Air, is discontinuing its operations.

Employers' earnings dip



Employers Holdings Inc., the Reno-based workers comp carrier, earned $25.5 million in the first quarter compared with $27.9 in the same quarter last year. Rate decreases in California hurt top-line growth even though the company had more policies in force than a year ago.

Miner's loss widens



Allied Nevada Gold Corp. of Reno lost $6.9 million in the quarter ended March 31 compared with a loss of $313,000 a year earlier. The company faces big costs as it works to reopen its Hycroft gold mine near Winnemucca.

Gas prices up



Gas prices in Reno average $3.80, up from $3.58 a month ago. AAA says prices average $3.76 in Carson City and $3.72 statewide.

Staffing agency acquired



AccuStaff, a Reno staffing company, acquired Temporary Labor Inc. of Reno. Temporary Labor, previously owned by Mauricio "Picho" Cortes, posted $1.2 million in revenues last year. Terms of the acquisition weren¹t disclosed by AccuStaff President Steve Conine.

Miner's earnings



Quadra Mining Ltd., which operates the big Robinson copper and gold mine at Ely, earned $79.8 million in the first quarter compared with $43.1 million a year earlier. Production was up, and metals prices remain high.

Paint plant



PPG will dedicate its new 95,000-square-foot paint plant at Tahoe Reno Industrial Center tomorrow. The facility will manufacture more than 15 million gallons of water-based paint annually once it's at full capacity.

Employers payout



Employer Holdings Inc., a workers compensation insurance headquartered in Reno, will pay a dividend of 6 cents a share June 4 to shareholders of record May 22.
